96 S Hooks

Steel, Patina, Wax
34L X 52.5H X 2D
July 2021

This piece was born out of my desire to learn and my inclination to create repetitive processes in my work to allow for a meditative relationship between myself and the work to develop. When I learned how to blacksmith Summer 2021, I thought what better way to learn how to move iron than to make the same shape over and over again. I forged 96 S-shaped hooks, attaching them in links of four in alternating helixes. The rings attaching the chains were cold bent from round stock. The frame was welded together and then the chain net was attached to it via half and quarter-sawed rings that I plug welded to the frame. Two half rings were plug welded to the top of the frame to allow the piece to hang from the ceiling to act as a room divider or be displayed slightly off of a wall through the use of brackets.
