HYDE

Steel, Patina, Acrylic Paint
24L X 12W X 6H inches
October 2023

This piece was inspired by the stretching of animal hides. I shaped the steel bowl to fold, drape, and look taut at certain places, to give the illusion of it being a fabric-like material. I purposefully left, and then further accentuated through patina, the marred surface of the steel to mirror stretch marks and scarring on skin. This surface is further juxtaposed with the uniformity of the frame that holds it.

To make this piece, I plasma cut 16-gauge sheet metal in an irregular organic shape and then cold-formed it into a bowl-like form using a hammer and an anvil.  I tig-welded the frame out of 3/8th square steel bar. The bowl was then suspended from the frame via 1/8th steel rods. Each rod was shaped according to placement, threaded through a hole drilled in the bowl, and tig-welded to the frame.
